2025 Winter Water Quality Webinar Series
Join the UW-Madison Division of Extension’s Agriculture Water Quality Program for a biweekly webinar series that will focus on the important factors impacting ground and surface water quality.
Each webinar will be an hour, starting at 12:00pm, and will have available one soil and water continuing education credit for certified crop advisors. Registration is free but required. Please contact us with questions, agwater@extension.wisc.edu.
JAN 21: Tile Drainage System Impacts on Water Quality
This webinar will share how the presence of tile drainage in the landscape impacts nutrient movement and water quality. Discover how old and broken tile lines can accelerate nutrient losses and learn effective methods for identifying problem tiles using maps and field inspections.
Speakers: Laura Paletta, Extension Ag Water Quality Outreach Specialist and Kevin Erb, Extension Conservation Professional Training Program Manager
FEB 4: Updates and Insights on Wisconsin’s Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy
Wisconsin’s extensive network of partners and stakeholders collaborates to prioritize water quality protection and remediation. This session will highlight updates to the Wisconsin Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy, incorporating a decade of research and experience. Join representatives from the Department of Natural Resources and UW researchers as they share insights into the strategy revision process and emerging scientific assessments.
Speakers: Steven Hall, UW-Madison Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences Assistant Professor and Wisconsin DNR
FEB 18: Nitrate Leaching: Trends in the Midwest and Local Impacts in Wisconsin
Join Lindsey Hartfiel, Discovery Farms Research Program Manager, and Kelsey Hyland, Agriculture Water Quality Outreach Specialist, for an in-depth discussion on nitrate leaching. This webinar takes a broad look at nitrate leaching across Midwestern agroecosystems then focuses in on UW Discovery Farms’ latest nitrate leaching research in Wisconsin dairy systems.
Speakers: Lindsey Hartfiel, Discovery Farms Research Program Manager, and Kelsey Hyland, Extension Agriculture Water Quality Outreach Specialist
MAR 4: Nitrogen Balance: Reevaluating Crop Rotations for Cleaner Water in Wisconsin
What is nitrogen balance, and how can it reshape crop rotations in Wisconsin’s agricultural landscapes? Join Dr. Steven Hall, Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences, and Guolong Liang, Agriculture Water Quality Outreach Specialist, for a conversation about water quality impacts under different crop rotations in Wisconsin.
Speakers: Steven Hall, UW-Madison Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences Assistant Professor and Guolong Liang, Extension Ag Water Quality Outreach Specialist
MAR 11: Neonicotinoid Insecticides: Widespread Use and Emerging Impacts on Agricultural Landscapes
Neonicotinoids, or “neonics,” are neurotoxic insecticides targeting insect central nervous systems. As the most widely used insecticides in Wisconsin, they are applied to millions of acres of agricultural and urban land. This webinar examines the growing body of research on the unintended harms of neonics, their agricultural efficacy, and their prevalence in the environment.
Speakers: Shawn Conley, UW-Madison Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences Professor and Russ Groves, UW-Madison Entomology Professor
