Programs

The Agriculture Water Quality programs are dedicated to promoting farming practices that protect and enhance water quality. Our unique programs offer innovative solutions that ensure farmers can grow healthy crops while preserving soil health and water quality.

Discovery Farms

Discovery Farms®, a program of UW-Madison Division of Extension, is a farmer-led research and outreach program focused on the relationship between agriculture and water quality. The program is unique in that it conducts research on privately-owned farms throughout Wisconsin, working with the U.S. Geological Survey to gather credible and unbiased water quality information from monitored sites.

Improving Groundwater in the Central Sands

The Wisconsin Central Sands region is particularly susceptible to nitrogen loss from farm fields due to its soil composition, crop types, and weather conditions. This program offers researched strategies to help agricultural landowners, operators, and advisors reduce nitrogen loss to groundwater.

Developing a Science Assessment for Wisconsin’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy

This assessment will focus on quantifying the effectiveness of different agricultural best management practices in reducing nutrient losses from farm fields to Wisconsin’s waterways.
